How grenades were evaluated
I tested grenades in solo runs, coordinated 4-player raids, and small-scale PvP skirmishes. Key evaluation metrics:
Immediate impact (damage or disruption on deployment)
Reliability across enemy types and map geometry
Versatility (how often it’s useful in both PvE and PvP)
Risk vs reward (self-harm potential and throw difficulty)
Synergy with teammates, weapons, and other grenades
I also included practical tests for bounce consistency, fuse timing, and placement windows to ensure recommendations are reproducible, not theoretical.
S Tier — Game-changers you should master
Overcharged Fragmentation
Overview: A heavy AoE fragment grenade with a main detonation and delayed secondary fragments; secondary shrapnel ignores part of light armor and detonates across a wide arc.
Why it’s S Tier: Its combination of raw damage and unpredictable secondary fragments makes it the single most reliable room-clear tool in both solo and coordinated play. In PvP, the delay and spread punish predictable movement and tight corners.
How to use:
PvE: Time throws to hit the center of a cluster as you enter the room. Fire teammates should be ready to finish partially damaged elites. Use bounce throws into choke points to hit enemies stacked behind cover.
PvP: Aim for choke intersections or throw at a corner wall so secondaries ricochet back through the doorway. Pair with a short CC (e.g., Concussive Blast) to keep enemies inside the fragment field.
Combos and synergy:
EMP Pulse → Overcharged Fragmentation: Disable shields, then drop fragmentation for massive raw damage.
Concussive Blast → Overcharged Fragmentation: Knock targets into the fragmentation cone for guaranteed secondary hits.
Counters:
Mobility (dash/blink) and anti-explosion perks. Anticipate mobility windows and time your throw to coincide with enemy reloads or CC effects.
Practice tip:
Practice wall-bounce angles in a low-stakes environment to learn reliable ricochet trajectories. Learning two standard bounce arcs on each popular map saves seconds under pressure.
Magnetic Field
Overview: Deploys a zone that pulls enemies slightly to its center, slowly drains shields/armor, and deals bonus damage to stationary targets.
Why it’s S Tier: Magnetic Field is simultaneously zoning, damage-dealing, and setup-oriented. It funnels enemies into predictable lanes, opening perfect windows for AoE explosives and burst weapons.
How to use:
PvE: Deploy behind objective points or at chokepoints where it can pull enemies into turret lines or grenade arcs. Use before wave arrival to control spawn flow.
PvP: Toss behind a doorway or near a revive point to trap aggressive players. The field also penalizes camping and prevents easy escapes.
Combos and synergy:
Magnetic Field + Thermite Canister: Pull enemies into burning ground for delayed, unavoidable damage.
Magnetic Field + Sticky Shrapnel: Hold the enemy long enough for the shrapnel detonation to be devastating.
Counters:
Mobility and certain CC immunity modules break the pull. Place field slightly off-center to account for enemy awareness.
Practice tip:
Learn timing windows: throw, step back, and be ready to capitalize as enemies are pulled into your kill zones.
A Tier — High-impact choices with clear windows
Thermite Canister
Overview: Creates persistent burning areas that apply high damage over time (DoT) and denies space for extended durations.
Why it’s A Tier: Thermite forces enemy positioning. In objective maps and during revives, it’s a guaranteed way to clear space and apply pressure without exposing yourself.
How to use:
PvE: Block spawn paths or box in elite mobs to force predictable movement. When defending, place canisters across likely approaches.
PvP: Layer with Proximity Mines to secure revive spots and create lethal funnels.
Combos and synergy:
Thermite + Overcharged Fragmentation: Burn then finish survivors as they try to move through the flame.
Thermite + Gas Cloud: The combination turns an area into sustained chaos and hideous visibility for the enemy team.
Counters:
High mobility or kits with burn resistance. Predict where players will move and place Thermite where escape routes force them into the damage.
Practice tip:
Time your Thermite deployment for the duration of enemy push windows; overlapping durations between teammates maximizes area denial.
EMP Pulse
Overview: Short-range pulse that disables shields, interrupts charge abilities, and temporarily reduces enemy accuracy.
Why it’s A Tier: EMP is the prime tool against shielded enemies and mechanical units. It creates a short but decisive window for your team’s burst damage.
How to use:
PvE: Use on shielded elites and robotic units before committing major DPS. Ensure your team follows up.
PvP: Time during ultimates or just before a coordinated team push to remove defensive layers.
Combos and synergy:
EMP → Overcharged Fragmentation or heavy burst weapons during the disabled period.
EMP → Magnetic Field: EMP disables shields making the field drain more lethal.
Counters:
EMP range is limited; position yourself carefully and communicate with teammates so they’re ready to engage.
Practice tip:
Learn optimal placement so you catch both the main target and nearby supports in the EMP radius.
Cryo Burst
Overview: Creates a slowing field that severely reduces movement and attack speed; smaller enemies can freeze.
Why it’s A Tier: Cryo Burst’s slow is among the best soft CCs available—excellent for kiting, peel, and setting up high-damage follow-ups.
How to use:
PvE: Slow fast-moving swarms or freeze smaller mobs to stop noisy reinforcements. Use ahead of boss phases to reduce damage windows.
PvP: Defensive slow when retreating; throw behind you to force chasers into crossfire.
Combos and synergy:
Cryo Burst + Sniper: Freeze or slow targets for clean long-range kills.
Cryo Burst + Magnetic Field: Keep enemies locked and slow to amplify follow-up detonations.
Counters:
Freeze immunities and specific builds. Use Cryo as part of a mixed-CC toolkit.
Practice tip:
Learn the duration and area so you can predict where slowed enemies will land after movement abilities finish.
Sticky Shrapnel
Overview: Adheres to surfaces or targets and detonates after a short delay, releasing directional shrapnel in a cone.
Why it’s A Tier: Sticky Shrapnel’s ability to attach to moving targets and to delayed-detonate makes it a high-payoff, high-skill tool for both PvE and PvP.
How to use:
PvE: Stick to bosses or moving units and detonate when they’re funneled into narrow areas.
PvP: Stick to vehicles, cover, or common revive points and detonate as an enemy enters.
Combos and synergy:
Sticky Shrapnel + Proximity Mines: Layer traps to make stepping into the area catastrophic.
Sticky Shrapnel + Overcharged Fragmentation: Use shrapnel to corral and finish damaged enemies.
Counters:
Destroyable surfaces and certain gadgets may remove the sticky effect; attach to players or durable structures where possible.
Practice tip:
Practice timing the detonation so you get maximum cone coverage on moving targets.
B Tier — Situational but useful tools
Concussive Blast
Overview: Strong knockback and suppression that displaces enemies and reduces speed briefly.
Why it’s B Tier: It’s an exceptional peel and reposition tool, but its effectiveness depends heavily on map geometry and predictable enemy movement.
How to use:
PvE: Knock charging enemies into hazards or pull them away from objectives.
PvP: Separate a dueling enemy from their support or push a meleer off a revive.
Combos and synergy:
Concussive Blast + Gravity Well: Use knockback to make enemies fall into the well or away into line of fire.
Concussive Blast + Sticky Shrapnel: Knock targets into sticky traps for heavy follow-up damage.
Counters:
Sturdy players and move-immune builds reduce its effectiveness.
Practice tip:
Learn angles where knockback sends enemies into environmental damage or off ledges.
Incendiary Sphere
Overview: Smaller explosion with lingering burns that are safe to use and less self-damaging.
Why it’s B Tier: Reliable harassment and area denial without the high-risk throw profile of bigger explosives. Great for pressuring enemies behind cover.
How to use:
PvE: Use on soft groups and adds that survive fragmentation due to armor types.
PvP: Harass enemies behind cover or deny partial healing stations.
Combos and synergy:
Incendiary + Incendiary weapon perks for burn stacking.
Incendiary + Flashbang to punish enemies fleeing cover.
Counters:
Quick movement and burn immunity. Use to create pressure rather than expecting instant kills.
Practice tip:
Toss at predictable cover spots and learn how long burning patches remain effective in heavy-traffic areas.
Gas Cloud
Overview: Lingering cloud that impairs vision and deals damage over time to breathing-type enemies.
Why it’s B Tier: Its strength is area denial and vision control; damage is often secondary. Extremely useful on objectives and revive denial.
How to use:
PvE: Deploy to split mob movement and to force enemies into kill zones.
PvP: Plant inside objective bubbles and near revive spots to prevent enemy resurgences.
Combos and synergy:
Gas + Thermite: Heavy denial that stacks damage and reduces safe areas for enemies.
Gas + Magnetic Field: Pull enemies into the cloud for extended exposure.
Counters:
Gas masks/equipment and ranged players who can shoot from outside the cloud. Use gas to shape movement rather than rely on kills.
Practice tip:
Learn which maps have common choke points where gas will linger longest and be most disruptive.
Sonic Disruptor
Overview: Emits a disruptive wave that reduces aim stability, briefly interrupts abilities, and reveals cloaked targets.
Why it’s B Tier: Its disruptive function is invaluable against aim-reliant enemies and stealth comps, though it lacks direct damage.
How to use:
PvE: Use on aim-dependent elite units to reduce incoming damage.
PvP: Toss into sniper nests or behind which marksmen hide; their accuracy degrades drastically.
Combos and synergy:
Sonic Disruptor + Cryo Burst: Slow and disrupt for near-guaranteed team pick-ups.
Sonic Disruptor + EMP: Double utility to force errors and remove defensive options.
Counters:
Less useful against tanks or non-aim dependent foes.
Practice tip:
Note that the disruptor affects both vision and audio cues—use it to mask pushes.
Proximity Mines
Overview: Deployable mines that explode when enemies enter proximity.
Why it’s B Tier: Great for passive defense and catching unsuspecting flanks, but they are predictable and can be cleared if players look for them.
How to use:
PvE: Plant along expected patrol routes and behind flanks to protect turrets and objectives.
PvP: Place mines around revive points and behind soft cover where enemies step without scanning.
Combos and synergy:
Proximity Mines + Thermite: Mines trigger thermite patches or push enemies into burning ground.
Proximity Mines + Sticky Shrapnel: A two-stage trap that punishes stepping into common paths.
Counters:
Players who check corners and use scanners; rotate placements and use decoys to bait.
Practice tip:
Vary height and spacing. Mines that are obvious are worthless—hide them slightly off the expected path.
C Tier — Niche but potentially clever
Smoke Screen
Overview: Heavy visual obstruction that blocks line-of-sight and sensors but deals no damage.
Why it’s C Tier: Smoke is heavily team-dependent—powerful when coordinated, confusing and dangerous when misused.
How to use:
PvE: Conceal revives or repositioning maneuvers in coordinated squads.
PvP: Use as a cover to reposition or to fake a retreat. Well-timed smoke can ruin enemy aim and sightlines.
Combos and synergy:
Smoke + Magnetic Field: Hold enemies in the field while smoke prevents their team from clean shots.
Smoke + Training Dummy Pod: Create a feint, then capitalize on enemy mispositioning.
Counters:
Thermal or sensor-based visors and AoE effects. Coordinate smoke usage to avoid blinding your own team.
Practice tip:
Practice smoke timing and team positioning; smoke with no follow-up is wasted.
Flashbang Mk II
Overview: High-intensity flash with a short stun window effective at close range.
Why it’s C Tier: Effective but short-lasting; requires immediate follow-up to capitalize on the stun.
How to use:
PvE: Interrupt heavy attacks and reset aggro for brief windows.
PvP: Combine with coordinated pushes; one flash without follow-up yields nothing.
Combos and synergy:
Flashbang + Overcharged Fragmentation: Flash, then frag for massive immediate damage.
Flashbang + Sticky Shrapnel: Flash to pin vision and detonate shrapnel on confused targets.
Counters:
Fast-reacting players or those with flash resistance. Practice short-notice follow-up kills.
Practice tip:
Coordinate a “flash leader” in squads who signals and times follow-up power.
Gravity Well
Overview: Short-lived but strong pull followed by a brief disable of movement abilities in the affected zone.
Why it’s C Tier: Powerful in ideal situations but often avoided by competent enemies; short duration limits its standalone value.
How to use:
PvE: Force bosses into a kill zone during vulnerable phases.
PvP: Yank an overextended enemy into teammates’ lines while silencing their escape tools.
Combos and synergy:
Gravity Well + Concussive Blast: Chain displacement effects for environmental or follow-up kills.
Gravity Well + Overcharged Fragmentation: Yank and fragment for maximum area damage.
Counters:
Players with mobility burst or ability immunity. Place slightly in front of anticipated movement rather than center to effect better catches.
Practice tip:
Learning to predict enemy dashes yields far better returns than direct placement.
D Tier — Fun but not competitive
Confetti Grenade
Overview: Cosmetic effect with minor utility in confusing enemies for a split second.
Why it’s D Tier: Purely novelty. Useful only in social or humor-focused matches.
How to use:
Use in custom matches, highlight clips, or to troll friends.
Training Dummy Pod
Overview: Deploys a decoy that draws limited aggro and serves as a distraction.
Why it’s D Tier: Only useful for practice or baiting in very niche scenarios.
How to use:
Use in drills to practice grenade timing or to test spawn behavior.

Bounce drill: set up markers on popular corners and practice two reliable ricochet angles for fragmentation.
Combo timing with a partner: practice EMP → frag sequence until the muscle memory is solid.
Common mistakes and fixes
Mistake: Throwing grenades without cover. Fix: Always throw from a protected angle or during a teammate distraction.
Mistake: Expecting single-grenade kills in heavy armor scenarios. Fix: Use grenades to create windows for weapons, not as sole damage source.
Mistake: Lack of coordination on area denial. Fix: Communicate durations and stacking so teammates know when an area is dangerous.
Mistake: Overinvesting in novelty grenades. Fix: Prioritize utility-based grenades early in progression.
Frequently Asked Questions
What grenade is the most OP in Arc Raiders?
The grenade that most consistently shifts outcomes is the Overcharged Fragmentation because of its multi-stage damage profile and its ability to punish clustered movement both in PvE and PvP.
Which grenade should I use to speed-run solo raids?
Start with Overcharged Fragmentation for raw clear speed and add Thermite Canister for segments that require holding or denying space. Swap in EMP Pulse if you encounter shield-heavy elites.
What grenade combo denies revives best?
Layer Thermite Canister over revive points, surround with Proximity Mines, and hide Sticky Shrapnel to detonate when enemies commit to the revive attempt.
How do I counter a team stacking Magnetic Field?
Mobility, displacement, and EMP-style ability breakers are the best counters. Use dashes and mobility perks to escape the pull and carry EMP or similar items to neutralize the field’s advantage.
Are any grenades useless for competitive play?
Grenades like Confetti Grenade and the Training Dummy Pod are strictly novelty or practice tools and should not be prioritized in competitive progression.
How important is cooldown reduction?
Extremely important—reducing cooldown translates directly into more control windows and more frequent high-impact plays. If your role is objective control, this should be a top stat.
Can grenades be used defensively as well as offensively?
Yes. Grenades like Cryo Burst, Magnetic Field, and Proximity Mines shine defensively—slowing pushes, trapping flanks, and securing objectives.
Should squads specialize or diversify their grenades?
A mixed approach is optimal. Have at least one area-denial tool (Thermite or Gas), one disruption/utility (EMP or Magnetic), and one high-damage finisher (Fragmentation or Sticky Shrapnel).
Final notes and next steps
Mastering grenades in Arc Raiders elevates both individual skill and team coordination. Begin by mastering the S-tier picks: Overcharged Fragmentation and Magnetic Field. Once those are second nature, add EMP Pulse, Thermite Canister, and Sticky Shrapnel to your core rotation. Practice the timing and bounce patterns on your most-played maps, then introduce layered traps to make your plays predictable for teammates and deadly for opponents.
Solo Speed-Run Loadout
Purpose: Maximum clear speed, survivability during aggressive pushes, and fast grenade recycle so you can chain room clears.
Primary grenade
Overcharged Fragmentation — core clear tool for clustered spawns and finishing elites.
Secondary grenade
Thermite Canister — rapid area-denial for chokepoints or when you need to force pathing.
Weapons
Primary: High-rate-of-fire Assault Rifle (stability mods; high magazine)
Why: Consistent sustained DPS to finish targets weakened by fragmentation.
Secondary: Lightweight SMG or Auto Pistol (quick ADS, mobility perks)
Why: Close-range cleanup while kiting between grenade cooldowns.
Recommended perks and stat priorities
Top priority: Cooldown Reduction (grenade cooldown reduced by ~30–40%)
High: Throw Velocity and Range (faster, more precise throws)
Mid: Blast Radius (boost Overcharged Fragmentation coverage)
Mid: Damage vs. Light Armor (boosts fragment efficiency)
Low: Survivability (small flat HP or resist) — enough to survive occasional stray hits
Weapon mods (examples)
Assault Rifle: High-RPM barrel; extended mag; recoil stabilizer; thermal sight if you like clarity in smoke.
SMG: Lightweight receiver; rapid-change mag; hip-fire spread reduction.
Tactical gadgets / mobility
Short mobility dash or recharge boost; small instant-heal stim for reckless pushes.
Playstyle and execution
Enter every room with an Overcharged Fragmentation pre-aimed at choke points. Use the SMG to finish survivors while the fragmentation secondaries finish waves. Throw Thermite behind you as you clear to block reinforcements or to cover retreat path. Keep moving to avoid being punished by delayed fragment arcs.
Combos and micro-rotations
Primary rotation: Throw Overcharged Fragmentation → ADS and spray with Assault Rifle → Sprint room to room → Toss Thermite on staging chokepoints → repeat when cooldown returns.
If you encounter shielded elites, briefly swap Thermite for EMP Pulse for the single encounter.
Squad Objective-Control Loadout
Purpose: Maximize team control, objective denial, and setup for high-damage follow-ups from teammates.
Primary grenade
Magnetic Field — funnels enemies and drains shields so your team gets predictable targets.
Secondary grenade
EMP Pulse — disable shields and abilities during windows your team will burst.
Weapons
Primary: Designated Support AR or DMG-buffed Carbine (moderate fire-rate, mid-range control)
Why: Reliable mid-range suppression while teammates capitalize.
Secondary: Designated LMG or high-penetration AR (for sustained suppressive fire)
Recommended perks and stat priorities
Top priority: Shield Drain and Field Radius (for Magnetic Field effectiveness)
High: Cooldown Reduction (so you can re-drop fields often)
High: EMP Range and Effect Duration
Mid: Team Bonus Aura (if available — increases allied accuracy/damage when near your field)
Low: Throw Fuse Control (slightly longer fuse for optimal timing)
Weapon mods (examples)
Support AR: Stabilized stock; long-range barrel; ally damage beacon (if available).
LMG: Heat sink mod; extended belt; tracer rounds to mark pulled enemies.
Tactical gadgets / team utilities
Deployable beacon or marker that tells teammates where you’ll put the field; smoke only when coordinated (to prevent friendly obscuration).
Playstyle and execution
Anchor near the objective. Pre-place Magnetic Field slightly off-center so it pulls players into your team’s firing arcs. Use EMP right before major enemy pushes or when you know the enemy will pop defensive ultimates. Communicate so teammates stack damage during the shield-down window.
Combos and choreography
Ideal chain: Magnetic Field (pull) → EMP Pulse (disable shields) → Teammate burst (high damage weapons, explosives) → Thermite (seal off escape routes).
For revive denial: Drop Thermite on the point after Magnetic Field has funneled enemies; hold the area while mines or sticky shrapnel punish attempts to cross.
PvP Flank Loadout
Purpose: Surprise plays, single-target elimination, and denying escape/revive options in competitive fights.
Primary grenade
Sticky Shrapnel — stick to cover, doors, or players and detonate once enemy movement is predictable.
Secondary grenade
Cryo Burst — slows and soft-CC to secure kills and prevent escapes.
Weapons
Primary: High-damage Shotgun or Close-Range Burst Rifle (one-shot/short-range lethality)
Why: Maximize kill potential when enemies are pinned by shrapnel + cryo.
Secondary: Precision pistol or Marksman Carbine for forced finishing shots when enemies try to bail.
Recommended perks and stat priorities
Top priority: Throw Adhesion (increased chance to stick; delayed detonation control)
High: Cooldown Reduction (repeat sticky placement and Cryo use)
High: Mobility and Stealth (faster flank movement and quieter steps)
Mid: Slow Amplifier (increases Cryo slow duration or effect)
Low: Explosive Penetration (let shrapnel punch through light cover)
Weapon mods (examples)
Shotgun: Close-range choke; high-damage slug; fast pump or semi-automatic receiver.
Marksman: Quick-charge scope; crisp trigger; light recoil pad.
Tactical gadgets / mobility
Short cloak or low-noise boots; fast dash or double-jump to exit after the kill.
Playstyle and execution
Flank silently toward expected enemy revive points or behind cover. Stick the environment (or a distracted enemy) with Sticky Shrapnel, then retreat to a prepared angle. When enemies commit to retrieving a downed teammate or holding a point, trigger the shrapnel and immediately throw Cryo Burst to slow survivors. Finish with a shotgun blast or quick burst rifle headshot.
Combos and timing
Typical PvP kill chain: Stick shrapnel to candidate cover → Lure or wait for enemy to approach → Detonate → Immediately throw Cryo Burst toward their escape vector → Commit with Shotgun burst.
If the target is shielded, swap the Cryo for a quick EMP or have an ally cycle EMP for instant shield break.
Universal tuning and deployment tips for all loadouts
Grenade cooldown management
Aim for ~30–40% cooldown reduction so you can deploy at least 2–3 grenades per objective cycle. Time throws around ability windows (enemy ultimates, boss enrage phases, spawn waves).
Throw practice
Spend 10–15 minutes per map practicing two consistent throw arcs: one direct and one bounce. Muscle memory on these arcs is worth more than marginal stat gains.
Situational swaps
If the enemy comp relies heavily on shields, swap a secondary grenade to EMP Pulse. If the map favors vertical play, favor Concussive Blast or Gravity Well as the secondary.
Comms and cues
For squad play, call your field placement sequence: “Field in 3 — EMP on 2 — Burst on 1”. Clear, short cues multiply grenade value.
Perk micro-adjust
If you find yourself frequently self-hitting, reduce Blast Radius slightly in favor of Throw Velocity and safer fuse control.
